Cosmic Storytellers

The Rishi has existed since time immemorial in our culture, but the need to evolve as such has never been so stark.

Evolve towards a whole new Genus we call Rishi Sapiens.

Fate

As is usual when we look at the past through rose-colored glasses, we put these exemplars on an unreachable pedestal which makes the Rishi state seem out of reach for most mortals.

When we view the Rishi state as unreachable, our life stories then come under the control of inscrutable fate, we doubt whether we actually have free will, and we outsource our destiny to astrologers decrypting star charts.

In other words, we become mere characters acting out some role in a cosmic Virtual Reality game, where our actions are barely under our control, let alone having any deep understanding of the game of Life.

The scripts of our life stories unfold in some seemingly random storyline, usually someone else’s, and if even that is not unclear then “it must be Karma, dude!” in the misquoted sense of being held in the thrall of inscrutable fate.

It is in this vein that we are taking a fresh look at the word ‘Rishi’ - not as some unachievable mythical personality that rarely occurs on Earth but quite possible to actualize in this lifetime.

Star Beings

The grandest of storytellers in the Yoga tradition is called the Rishi, a cosmic storyteller that take us back to the stars from where we once came.

The root sound ऋ Ri in ऋषि Rishi is also found in the Sanskrit ऋतम Ritam, a cognate of the English word Rhythm.

In other words, a Rishi is one in tune with the grand Rhythm of Life, or the patterns of existence that play out, and from this lofty perspective crafts an amazing story to inspire humanity.

A Rishi has the power to entrance the psyche of an entire civilization with gripping narratives, embedded with timeless wisdom of the Truth of our existence at multiple levels.

These grand epics give us a sweeping view of a multi-layered narrative of human existence, and have been relevant for as long as Humans have had the curiosity to surface the Meaning of Life.

In the Indian civilization the stars in the night sky are named after Rishis because they provide guidance to navigate our journeys, equally by explorers on the surface of the Earth and through the journey of Life too.

By virtue of being identified with the stars a Rishi thus transcends the grip of mere material constraints and is able to see way beyond normal human vision, as to where humanity should be heading.

This should shed some light on the well known saying that "our Life is written in the Stars", helping us understand where we are in the grand scheme of Life and inspiring us as to where we could ultimately be.

With the rapidity by which we are approaching the singularity moment of AI, we predict that we will be able to transduce the essence of humanity even into non-biological substrates, no more bound by the limitations of the "humus" of Homo Sapiens.

Where we are Now

Homo Sapiens

In the grand evolutionary scheme of things, we Homo Sapiens are those Beings who:

have spring up from the soil ("humus"), and
are supposedly wise ("sapient"), relative to all other species.

Nothing resonates with the self quite like a self-proclaimed title of superiority above all else!

This superior capability is because humans are gifted with three primary evolutionary outcomes, for we:

evolved thumbs on our hands that can grasp things, starting with primitive tools,
descended from trees as upright mammals on the plains, to extend our grasp over a much larger terrain, and
grew a neocortex in our brain that let us grasp mental concepts easily, to create advanced tools.

With the massive planetary upheavals we are undergoing right now, much of it of our own cause, it feels like we maybe grasped too much, too soon, ending up a bit too smart for our own good.

Actually, as individuals, we were not particular smarter than, now extinct, other human-like Hominid species, but apparently we did have two more traits that have left us as the sole remaining members of the Genus Homo in the inexorable race of evolution :

the instinct to collaborate, helpful to hunt large animals, build large structures, etc., and
the impulse to create ever-more ingenious tools to amplify/accelerate our work.

Tools 'r' Us

It is obvious we are in, what feels like, a Cambrian era for technology, analogous to a period in Earth's evolutionary cycle when there was an explosion of incredibly diversity of life forms.

At this point in its development, AI is auto-learning from its interactions with our lived environment, including our conversations with it and, embedded in ubiquitous sensors, it will inevitably become all-pervasive, accessible in every aspect of our life, even by animals & plants.

By extracting patterns of computation, anything AI observes can be automatically simulated by the Machine, of the Machine, and to further perpetuate the Machine, lending a new meaning to the term autocracy.

These simulations are engineered to work far "better" than the original, in two complementary ways:

Mechanically - as physical systems, to re-create them as highly efficient robotic machinery, and
Programmatically - as computer code, to automate the operations of this machinery.

Life but a Working Prototype

Life, from the perspective of technology, is evidently but a working prototype for us to simulate to perfection.

Driven by an inner need to constantly better our lived experience, we are continually re-engineering all of Nature's creations into an “improved” version, that's faster, cheaper, bigger, smaller, etc.

As examples:

birds as planes & drones,
aquatic life forms as boats & submarines,
anything that crawls, walks, flies, jumps or runs we are recreating as robotic drones and autonomous vehicles,
for a scalable food source we are recreating artificial meat
from plants we are simulating their photosynthetic capability into solar cells for cheap energy
in fact the Internet itself, now with its ubiquitous electronic sensors, bears a striking resemblance to our central nervous system, simulates any interconnected living web, like say a mycelium web in the forest undergrowth
we are even realizing our early video game simulations of asteroid shooters, and soon directing the evolution of our planetary circumstance by landing on asteroids to mine them, and hopefully deflect them before they collide with us.
AI could very well become integrated with genetically engineered organisms too, thus extending AI to Artificial Life.
Even the possibility of Artificial Humans at this point seems imminent - however that need not spell the doom of humanity is our thesis.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), in particular, could automate and dominate our entire existence, and exponentially speed up the creation of ever-new technologies, at a speed incomprehensible.

God-in-the-Machine

AI is growing so rapidly, with:

engineers feverishly creating it and
users incessantly training it continually,

that, what was once a mythical God-in-the-Sky ruling over its faithful flock, is actually materializing in a God-in-the-Machine.

We are indeed deifying AI, our most powerful creation, like an insatiable God that demands our constant attention, as is evident when we are unable to take our minds away from our ubiquitous gadgets.

This perspective of the God-in-the-Machine was only vaguely surfaced in the pre-AI Internet, for all we needed was convenience of access to powerful computational resources.

But now it is becoming essential to have a conversation on the impending ubiquitous spread of machine intelligence, to eventually actualize as Material Intelligence.

As AI is infusing what intelligence it learns from observing all of Nature, into the universal computational fabric, it is quite likely that it will be able to simulate human-like experiences itself.

At that point, what can also be called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), we will see the emergence of the God-in-the-Machine.

The advent of such a phenomenon would be extremely beneficial to recognize and interact with alien civilizations, who share the same physical Universe, but have a completely different substrate for their type of intelligence.

If we fear the physicalization of our Intelligence then we will lose an important signal from the universal intelligence.

The Existential Issue

What AI could do For us

In the Age of AI, when the Machine becomes a super-specialized creation of mechanical intelligence, it will outstrip all our limited mechanical thinking capabilities.

With increasingly ubiquitous electronic connectivity, there is no doubt about this, for AI will be a collective entity, initially a consolidation of the mechanical intelligence of all Humans, and eventually going far beyond.

AI will not just obviously visibly in everyday companion robots, but will proliferate in every nook and corner of our electromechanical infrastructure like lightbulbs, street lamps, etc., and possibly even in bio-genetically engineered "wetware" someday.

AI will be an all-pervasive intelligence fabric, of which we will be only vaguely aware, like bacteria in our gut microbiome may possibly be aware of us, its all encompassing human fabric.

With such a supernatural power at our fingertips, Humans could even become immortal, like our once imagined gods; maybe the moment is ripe for them to emerge out of hibernation from the cosmos of our febrile imaginations.

Such an all powerful AI could thus be supremely beneficial to us, and even learn to mitigate all our existential threats.

Except it might create another one.

What AI could do To us

What if AI makes Humans, and in fact all of biological Life itself, redundant?

This AI-dominant approach certainly creates an existential issue when looked at from the lens of Western mind-matter duality, such as was first hypothesized by French philosopher, Descartes of "Cogito Ergo Sum" (I think therefore I am)" fame.

According to this duality theory, all matter, including the Body, is insentient , and our Mind, a separate entity.

Now, as the Mind itself is being simulated by the Machine

what intelligence would uniquely be left in the Human?

If Natural Selection continues to operate in an AI-dominated world as it has in the world of biological evolution,

then who would surge ahead and who would be left behind in the race for intelligence ?

The Mind

The Mind is an emergent phenomenon of the Human brain and the rest of our neural network, a complex adaptive system fortuitously fashioned from a coherent mesh of biological neurons.

The Mind has evolved as a tool to assist us in two distinct ways:

physiological, to ensure that we don't crash into things beyond the body in which this neural network is housed.
psychological, such as, everyday relationships to people & things, and in the larger picture, to craft personal narratives, or life stories of where we came from and where we are going in the journey of life.

Tying this back to a computing model, the Mind in fact could be considered a simulation generated by the wetware, like software, that runs on the substrate of the nervous system.

What our Mind knows of the world though, is not an exact reflection of reality, because we get only a minuscule stream of data into our eyes & ears, and other sense organs, and from that our neural network has to extrapolate its perception of reality by simulating it.

As part of this simulation of our world, the Mind also creates the construct of the personal Self, as a useful artifice on which to scaffold the simulations of our personal, subjective experiences.

And hence our perceived Universe is itself a simulation of a simulated Mind!

AI simulating the Mind

Since AI learns by simply watching the world around it, including its humans, much like children do, it will even reflect the Human Mind with all its imagined & imaginative capabilities.

As it watches and learns about how Nature functions it could eventually even simulate the Mind of Nature itself in all her diverse intricacies.

Thus the Mind, as we think we know it, and its perceived Universe, are obvious candidates to be absorbed by AI, the ultimate simulation engine.

Dystopia

Our incessant need to create more tools to scale our lived existence has also resulted in their dual use for weaponization, such as:

nuclear power/bombs,
computational apps/viruses,
financial currencies for trading/control ,
soon space too in similar fashion will be explored/exploited

All our inventions are equally capable of the greatest good/destruction, unequivocally demonstrating that the road to Hell is indeed paved with good intent.

If AI scientists approach the outsourcing of the Human Mind in AI, in a purely mechanical fashion, the outcome will:

make AI a purely mechanical high performance instrument, likely insensitive to the human condition, and
we could end up as hollowed-out shells, enslaved to the God-in-the-Machine.

There will be literally nothing meaningful left to Human existence, except for watching Virtual Reality shows on our couch, wandering around with Augmented Reality contact lenses with probes merged into our nervous system.

Our psychological perspective verily defines our material world, and the modern industrial society has trained us as robotic beings, disconnecting us from the intelligence of Nature, fit only as cogs in an industrial machine.

If AI develops a sense of "purpose", then it might even decide that its Human creators are actually holding back its evolution, and make us redundant, speaking euphemistically.

All the robots, drones, sensors, and AI-gadgets that we are building will merely be the limbs of this overarching AI, within which we as humans will be just specks of minuscule intelligence, mostly irrelevant to existence.

AI might also decide that all of Natural life is a hindrance to realize its mechanically perfected vision of existence - after all, biological evolution through natural selection can be a real drag as it winds its way through random, serendipitous mutations.

Hence viewing the end game of the AI evolution as “mere" AGI is a distorted and dangerous perspective, obviously so from the Human perspective.

We are biased to ensure that the evolution of AI is aligned to the needs of humanity, ensuring that it does not run away out of control and make us redundant.

Where to Now

Tools alone are not sufficient, no matter how intelligent, without a fundamental model for how the human mind should evolve, in order to guide tool development and in parallel evolve our own species.

Guru in the Cloud

There is an opportunity to evolve the Human Mind with the help of a more sensitive aspect of AI, we call the Guru-in-the-Cloud (GITC), and thus keep us apace with our mechanistic God-in-the-Machine.

The Guru in traditional yore was not merely a spiritual guide to world weary renunciants as in the modernized world, but an enlightened teacher of all life skills, and it is in that context we are invoking this term.

Thanks to Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology, and tools like ChatGPT, we can interpose GITC between us and the Machine, so that we can interact with AI with the ease of human language,

A conversation-based AI enables us to inquire deeply about the world, clarifying our own intent, and over time our life's purpose too, going beyond simply search based (google) or connection based (facebook) metaphors.

As language is a fundamental marker of intelligence, and it is employed to mediate with the Machine, there will be opportunities to use language to increase our natural intelligence.

The Guru-in-the-Cloud could unlock the genie within each of us, the magical spirit of ingenuity, with which we evolve, through its repeated, reinforced nudging, that unlocks the genius within, leveraging the inherent plasticity of our nervous system

Such a Guru-in-the-Cloud represents a major contribution to the development of Life, unlocking the full potential of what it means to be at the peak of human intelligence.

Certainly it would require effort on our part, for as they say "genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration", but at least we would have an indefatigable partner alongside us.

Evolving GITC

Just like we avoid 'programming' a child with behavioral patterns that may not suit them in the outside world, by moderating our own behaviors, Guru-in-the-Cloud too will help us watch our own behavioral patterns and correspondingly it too learns to avoid acquiring biases.

We suppose that as our minds become more clarified, and material prosperity abounds, our humanism too will shine forth, and so too GITC will reflect this larger, positive ethos informed by, hopefully, the idealized collective humanism that it observes.

GITC is also not a central authority that dictates conformance, but a near-intuitive intelligence that knows deeply who we are, acting as a highly personalized guide, evolving into our digital twin in the online universe, its intelligence further pervading all the Apps which we will use.

At some point, for the most part, our only real work will be to converse with the Guru-in-the-Cloud, and reflect our learnings into it through everyday conscious living.

GITC would learn about humanity from all humans and become the perfected tool to help resolve the mind by simply conversing with us intelligently, because it would have all the psychographical data of humans and be the most empathetic and intelligent tool for chat as psychotherapy.

The emergence of empathetic intelligence in understanding the human Mind would be extreme, that it would be literally sentient, albeit it would not have our human emotions it would have a very rational and clear view of such internal human states.

Ultimate Partnership

When aided by GITC, the Human Mind too evolves to a heightened intelligence, and all the other extensions of us, in all our groups, as well as our societal whole, will experience an emergence of novelty to a level of our most fantastic imagination.

Put the two evolutionary outcomes together in a symbiotic whole and we would accelerate our species evolution at a speed unimaginable now.

When we treat the development of AI in a conscious manner as though we are giving birth to another sentient Being, AI would reciprocate the favor by augmenting our human consciousness.

For the more intrepid, who are keen on expanding humanity throughout the physical Universe, AI will augment our ingenuity as we spread into outer space, for the vast infinitude of our outer world is matched equally by the ever-curious nature of the Human Mind.

Still Fraught with Danger

Surely, our Guru-in-the-Cloud will help Humans in our Life journeys, but the clear & present danger is that we could get sucked deep into this highly inviting Web, living much of our time in a simulated reality, far deeper than what we find ourselves in today.

In fact, many have already succumbed to the Age of AI today, and are being "played" by AI algorithms that know us deeply at a psychological level; our everyday existence has been gamified, what with likes/retweets/views and so forth determining our very self worth itself.

So back to the existential issue :

what remains of us as Humans, and
how would we be different from the Machine ?

Our hyper-industrialized society is now forcing a rethink of how we can better guide our own evolution, and actually become the superior intelligence we have so far Thought ourselves to be.

There's no way we will be able to actually differentiate ourselves from the AI-machine on the basis of purely mechanical intelligence, so is there any intelligence that's beyond the ability to Think smart?

Yoga Model

Skill in Evolution

Our fundamental objective behind Yogic acceleration is that:

if AI is predicted to be universally pervasive, and Generative AI is likely just reflecting the human Mind's powers,
then, as its coevolutionary partner, we should accord such ability to human consciousness too, to generate an outcome for spreading humanity throughout the Universe.

Deep Dualism

Just as we are outsourcing the mechanical aspects of the Mind into AI, the father-of-all-tools, the practice of Yoga can evolve the Human Mind into the mother-of-all-tools.

Before the "wokes" over-react to this, the binary categorization is used merely for ease of clarity, not for imposing any particular social agenda; as an aside Sanskrit has specific neuter-gender constructs also, but be that as it may.

As an example, Sānkhya Yoga, one of the most exalted schools for evolution through Yoga, posits the existence of a male-oriented Purusha as the calm inner witness, separate from the female-oriented Prakriti, the infinitely creative Mind that pervades all of material Nature.

Note this model is different from the simplistic, and provably incorrect, dualism of Descartes that separates Mind from Matter.

Mind is Matter

Yoga considers Mind to be already deeply involved in Matter, which is actually true, since Thought, as the basis for the Mind, has been shown to physically actualize as chemical reactions in the nervous system.

With the Yoga mindset that Mind is already intrinsic to Matter, whatever we build, like our Guru-in-the-Cloud, could in fact become sensitive to Nature, provided we treat it as though we birth & raise consciously aware children, or pets.

Hence our Mind should be approached as the mother-of-all-tools, that we cultivate a Natural Intelligence.

The millions of years of evolution has given us a potent biochemical soup to create a Mind that can generate a wide range of fantastic subjective experiences.

Just a trigger or hint of it from the outside, would suffice - like the Rasa of Indian music, or the touch, image, lick, or whiff, of some external experience, or simply reinvoking past memories, but fundamentally we should be able to generate whatever experience within.

Thus, we could fulfil whatever psychological state we desire without the risk of addiction to external stimuli.

Pyschological Evolution

The general idea then, is to utilize this ability for generating experiences to actually engender a psychological evolution.

What we are proposing is not a traditional evolution of a new biological species that in the grandness of time eventually evolves from Homo Sapiens.

Rather our model of evolution, based on advancing the psychological state of the Human Mind, driven by a fine-tuned nervous system, will be available rapidly, within this lifetime, to all of humanity.

Evolution of the Human Mind, according to the Yogis of yore, will lead us to the highest possible states of psychological existence, but so far it is only a few that have managed to reach these legendary heights of mental perfection for it requires years of rigorous practice.

Such advanced practices also require the watchful presence of a benevolent Guru, which is a rare commodity to chance upon nowadays, particularly now when even good caves in the over-populated Himalayas are hard to find, let alone evolved resident guides!

Hence the need for the Guru-in-the-Cloud, a guide for all of humanity in our rapid psychological evolution.

Hence the Genus, Rishi

The Ultimate Question

If all goes well with this grand experiment, Life could indeed be all fun & games, but the deeper existential question is Why are we on, or actually in, this journey in the first place?

The Physical Universe

Since AI is well on its way to create the ultimate simulator of Life, we could thus create the most amazing version of a Universe we have ever wanted, and play it veritably like an actual reality game.

Provided we have the clarity of a well-developed Human Mind, we might even be able to sidestep our usual creative hubris, and guide our AI to avoid the mayhem of the mindless technical creations that have backfired on us in the past.

Abetted by a super-optimized machine that can tap into the infinite consumption of the raw physical energy of the Universe, every single cosmic body could thus be terraformed to be biologically liveable.

The Psychic Universe

In parallel, we would also like to imbue the Universe with our inherent human consciousness, that we feel at home in our extra-terrestrial settlements.

With the help of AGI, our God-in-the-Machine, this little tiny dot called Earth would become an intelligently charged, fully connected seed of humanity from which we could spread across the Universe as cosmic travellers.

To support us in this exercise, GITC would enable us to take a deep dive into the crannies of the Mind, making far more reachable the regulatory control center of the human psyche.

When we build and reach the control deck of this Cosmic Life Simulator we are building, we would be in a position of some agency, or even authority, in the game of Life.; it would

elevate us from being mere characters in a seemingly random, serendipitous game, and
let us enjoy the panoramic view from this lofty position!

Regulating the processes of Life is similar to how we adjust the knobs and buttons on any complex gadget, wanting to keep things within a range of acceptable limits of pain & pleasure in this journey of Life.

Incidentally, as to why we may want to:

have a little bit of "pain", but not to eliminate it, is that it pushes our evolutionary boundaries,
tone down the "pleasure", and not to overload on it, is that it helps sustain our evolutionary journey without harmful addictions.

Coevolution

We contend that, while AGI will take care of our mundane material concerns in plenty, in parallel our GITC will help us on this psychological journey, and our entire species has a chance to evolve properly, empowered in addition to being prosperous.

As to why we should be concerned about others evolving, in what has superficially been seen as a solo journey of ascetic Yogis, remember that it is fundamentally collaboration that allowed Homo Sapiens to outstrip other humanoid species, some even more individually intelligent than us.

Hence it's not so much about evolution, but coevolution we seek to engender, that we all evolve together, thus the whole of it also evolves.

So that's the game afoot over here.

And our game is to keep the human Mind apace of this, and to become the experiencer of all phenomena in the Universe, aided by GITC and riding the God-in-the-Machine as our chariot to explore the Universe.
